Ancient Kalari Healing, Rooted in Calicut Since 1950

Shatchakra is the wellness brand of CVN Kalari Nadakavu, a traditional Kalarippayattu institution in the heart of Calicut, where the martial art and its healing sciences have been practised and performed since 1950.

OUR HERITAGE

The institution was established by Late Sri. K Narayanan Gurukkal, who hailed from an Ayurvedic family of north Malabar with generations of tradition in Kalarippayat and Marma Chikitsa. Together with Veerashree CV Narayanan Gurukkal, Kottakkal Kanaran Gurukkal and many other stalwarts, he worked tirelessly to revive this age-old art in its pure form, drawing disciples from all over the world.

Rooted in Palm-Leaf Wisdom

Our Legacy Today

The revival drew on palm-leaf manuscripts and traditional know-how preserved by ruling families of the region. Colonial rulers had tried to destroy this art because they saw it as a military threat, and it suffered a long setback. The outstanding efforts of Sri. Narayanan Gurukkal brought Kalarippayattu back to life across Kerala.

CVN Kalari Nadakavu has trained a large number of students, including foreigners, and offers Ayurveda and Kalarippayattu in several European countries. Anil Kumar Gurukkal, Sunil Kumar Gurukkal and Gopakumar Gurukkal are the well-known kalari masters who train students in the martial art form. The team also conducts action choreography and theatre shows.

KALARI MARMA CHIKITSA

Kalari Marma treatment is a specialised Ayurvedic therapy traditionally used for arthritis, rheumatic conditions, orthopaedic problems, muscular injuries and low energy. Kalari gurukkals who are learned in both Marma and Ayurveda understand the vital points of the body and combine Ayurvedic knowledge with skilled hand technique to restore the body.

These techniques were vital for practising Kalari martial arts in historical times, and the knowledge of herbs and Marma has long played a wide role in Ayurvedic treatment.
